To start this project I started by researching movie and game box covers. This would be a starting point would help to find inspiration and aiding the design process. This gave me a good chance to pick up on themes and normal trends that apply to layout DVD covers
When researching this on the web, different types of films had distinctively different types of cover depending on the genre.

Horror Imagery
One of the three options I was considering was the horror genre.
One thing I noticed Horror films tend to have dark covers, this is probably because the majority of horrors tend be mostly set in the night time. And it’s a good way of implying that it going to be a dark or unsettling content.
Another possibly over used Cover would be a closes up of a human eye.
This can be seen the remake of the Grudge or the game Resident Evil Revelations 2.

This
is then complemented with grungy font usually in red or using a lot a red
colour pallet.
Things are left vague on the cover for your mind to fill in the blanks. In the same way you tend not to get a good look at the killer/monster until the end of the film making the watcher fill in the gaps with whatever is scary to them.

The next cover is from a DVD re-release classic horror Alfred Hitchcock - Psycho collector’s edition
This film is very well known and well regarded as a classic also would be considered a bit tame by today horror standards. Being released in 1960 there would be very little shock value in putting images up from the film so they have made Norman Bates Iconic knife the main image and joined it with the title text. The old film reals in the back ground imply it’s a classic showing it was made long before everything when digital. The tittle and the image of the knife it sums up the basic plot of the film the films about someone with Psychological disorder and their weapon of choosing is a kitchen knife.
Something simler can be seen in the cover for the evil dead as seen below
At a glance
you can tell that the man is the good guy and not the killer, And There will be
a fair amount a gore. This is also backed when you see lady isn't covered in
blood adding more evidence that Bruce Campbell is protecting the female lead
that is behind him. Even thought she was almost certainly not there when the
original photo was taken but superimposed in later.
In this cover for the 1958 film "Horror of Dracula". You can
see the Count kidnapping a beautiful unconscious woman on a dark stormy night.
Basically the whole set up for the story. This cover is the original film
poster that was hand painted.
