Science fiction Imagery
I
was looking forward to researching the science fiction as it was a big subject
lot of other types of film cross over into Science Fiction, such as Action,
Horror, Fantasy, Western to name but a few. All though there plots and
inspirations differ widely a lot of trend do start to show through.
For example covers usually have a large area of black background to symbolise space. Blue and other cold colours are used to show itcold dark and loanly.
Bright or warmer colours are usually applied as contrast or to draw attention to an important aspect.
They tend to centre on the cast (or the playable character in games) as can be seen in theses example from star trek and star wars films
The same could be said for Event horizon and The Last Star Fighter, Starship Troopers breaks away from the normal colour scheme. But this movie could be classed as a War film in space so it makes sense that some elements of the action movies come across.
These colours schemes seem to have always been around , the only real different is that a lot of the pre 1990 images where hand painted.
See below the cover for Fritz Lang's silent sci-fi Metropolis(1927) & Blade Runner-(1982) and
Forbidden Planet (1956)
In the games department lot follow the same trends some even have hand drawn art work.
By this point I had decided I was going to go with science
fiction. There seemed to be a lot of freedom in the genre to potently make something
really interesting.
I had learnt about the colours I should be working with as well as few of the main themes.
